Analytical Engine Design Methods: A Review

Computer based analytical design techniques are transforming the engine design process. Analytical tools allow faster and more accurate design optimization. The design process is also shortened because the electronic transfer of files permits the design to be worked concurrently by engineers working with different analysis packages or on various parts of the design. Prototype parts and tooling can be made directly from the Computer-Aided Design (CAD) by various rapid prototyping methods. The analytical design techniques can also permit a highly optimized design with less possibility of corrections being necessary in the development stages. This paper reviews these new design techniques and examines how they can be used to improve the design technique. The following design tools are discussed.

Intricacies of SAE #2 Computerized Clutch Friction Durability Testing

This paper discusses the implications of computerizing the SAE #2 clutch friction durability tests that General Motors Corporation and Ford Motor Company require for automatic transmission fluid certification. There are three reasons for this paper. 1) Friction durability testing is a significant part of a much larger battery of tests needed to qualify a fluid. 2)There have been recent modifications concerning computerization of both the Ford and GM tests. 3) Because there are only two OEM qualified testing facilities, the details of certain testing intricacies in the areas of data acquisition, reduction and reporting may not be as understood as well as in other areas of automotive-based standardized testing. Formulators of automatic transmission fluid need to be aware of all details surrounding the collection and evaluation of the data that will result in the final test report.

Engine Friction Modeling

This paper describes the results of using the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) engine friction model to examine the effects of changing certain design parameters on the friction of a gasoline engine. The paper gives the results of an examination of the effects of changing the main and cam-shaft bearing aspect ratio on the friction of those bearings, and the effect of the tension of the piston rings, and the gas loading on them. The model predicts that the friction of the piston rings is the highest single component in the friction, except at high engine speeds, where the predicted windage was greater. Next, after the piston rings, was the piston skirt friction. The remaining components were relatively small, and in order of importance were the accessories, the cam bearing friction, cam/tappet friction, the main bearing, the crank pin, and oscillatory friction in the valve train, in that order.

Cetane Number Prediction from Proton-Type Distribution and Relative Hydrogen Population

A theoretical model for predicting cetane number of primary reference fuels from parameters measurable by proton nuclear magnetic resonance is presented. This modeling technique is expanded to include secondary reference fuels, pure hydrocarbons, and commercial-type fuels. An evaluation of the ignition process indicated that not only hydrogen type distribution measurable by proton NMR, but also relative hydrogen population is important in predicting cetane number. Two mathematical models are developed. One predicts cetane number of saturate fuels and the second predicts cetane number of fuels containing aromatic components. The aromatic fuel model is tested using the ASTM Diesel Check Fuels and shown to predict within the standard error of the model.

A Second Generation Expert System for Diagnosis and Repair of Mechanical and Electrical Devices

Existing expert systems have a high percentage agreement with human experts in a particular field in many situations. However, in many ways their overall behavior is not like that of a human expert. These areas include the inability to give flexible, functional explanations of their reasoning processes and the failure to degrade gracefully when dealing with problems at the periphery of their knowledge. These two important shortcomings can be improved when the right knowledge is available to the system. This paper presents an expert system design, called the Integrated Diagnostic Model (IDM), that integrates two sources of knowledge: a shallow, empirically-oriented, experiential knowledge base and a deep, functionally-oriented, physical knowledge base. To demonstrate the IDM's usefulness in the problem area of diagnosis and repair of electrical and mechanical devices, two implementations and our experience with them is described.

A Critical Analysis of Traffic Accident Data

General agreement exists that the ultimate goals of traffic accident research are to reduce fatality, mitigate injury and decrease economic loss to society. Although massive quantities of data have been collected in local, national and international programs, attempts by analysts to use these data to explore ideas or support hypotheses have been met by a variety of problems. Specifically, the coded variables in the different files are not consistent and little information on accident etiology is collected. Examples of the inadequacies of present data in terms of the collected and coded variables are shown. The vehicular, environmental and human (consisting of human factors and injury factors) variables are disproportionately represented in most existing data files in terms of recognized statistical evidence of accident causation. A systems approach is needed to identify critical, currently neglected variables and develop units of measurement and data collection procedures.

Diesel Fuel Injection Viewed as a Jet Phenomenon

The theory of submerged jets is applied quantitatively and qualitatively to diesel fuel sprays, based on simple considerations of the inherent invalidity of the single-particle “ballistic” approach. Approximate theoretical results are obtained for penetration velocity, penetration versus time, and fuel-air ratio within the spray. Modeling experiments are discussed and the jet approach used to explain two types of diesel combustion situations-fuel entrapment by insufficient penetration in the presence of air swirl and the efficacy of the MAN process.

Correlation of Prototype and Scale Model Vehicle Performance in Clay Soils

In an attempt to establish correlation between off-road performance of full-size vehicles and scale models in clay type soils by use of a similitude analysis, the U. S. Army Transportation Research Command (TRECOM) conducted a series of vehicle performance tests in three types of cohesive soils for a complete range of moisture content levels. This investigation covered a study of all soil parameters that could affect vehicle performance in low, medium, and high cohesion disaggregated soils, including the effects of vehicle weight, tire design, speed, slip, and soil characteristics on drawbar pull and tire sinkage. The results obtained and experience in testing techniques accumulated from this project are described.

This paper is concerned with an adjustable scale model capable of tracing maneuverability patterns of trailer trains. The transient kinematic paths of a multiple unit carrier of train configuration consisting of ten cargo units provided with conventional two wheel steering, conventional four wheel steering, and modified four wheel steering with a steering ratio and delayed steering action are investigated and discussed.
